Gene Silencing

At the Institute of Medical Virology an important field of research was oligonucleotide-mediated gene silencing predominantly of HIV/RNase H and as well of other viruses as well as oncogenes and cancer. The approach using partially complementary hairpin loop-structured oligodeoxynucleotides is the bases of several business plans for companies to develop interventions against infectious diseases and cancer. Various patents regarding this approach are issued or pending (Unitectra, Technology Transfer Office, University of Zurich).
